5 Step Outline

- The new bell schedule has an added 60 minutes that is frustrating students because

- A team and B team don’t have classes together and can’t eat lunch together so the only time they can see each other is morning recess, passing, and after school which limits their friendship.

- Even though most of the changes are negative for students and teachers, there are some good things about it such as adding more electives to the bell schedule so students can pick what classes they participate in.

- Students think that adding classes will not improve student learning because they put an extra period after lunch so there are two periods together.

- Students and teachers feel that it would be better to change the schedule back to normal.

V.O. = Like in all middle and high schools across the state, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, now has a new bell schedule that has affected students and teachers throughout campus. Some people say that the change is good, but others say that it is bad.

- Wide shot of school

- Medium shot of statue

- B-Roll of students walking

Mr. Godsill = We’ve added time to the day, so based on Act 167, it is requiring secondary schools to lengthen the school day, so this year, we have lengthen the school day so, we’re beginning at 7:45, and students are in class until 2:45.

- Lower third of  Mr. Godsill

V.O = This change has affected a majority of the of the students, teachers, and staff workers in their everyday lives

- B-Roll of students walking to the cafeteria

Kevin Peterson = This affects me because, I used to get home at 3:15 but now I am getting home at 4:15, and when I get home, I need to get ready for soccer,go practice and then, come home and its like super late. Then I have to do my homework then go to bed

Ms. Finlay = I feel like I am more rushed and I am running from one spot to another. I can’t keep my curriculum straight, so for example, in the morning I have my P.E class, then I have to rush to my classroom, which is in another room, to get my materials that I then need to take to the library for my prep period, then when that bell goes, I have to run back to my classroom to get my Science class going, then after Science class I have to transition into advisory, and then it’s lunch, then I got back to Science. So I feel like I am running back and forth going all over the place and running all around campus.

V.O. = The new bell schedule is hard to adjust to for students and teachers, not only does this affect them during and after school, but it also affects their friendship with other students.

- B-Roll of students walking and talking

- Picture of friends sitting down and talking, playing games, ext.

Ms. Finlay = I think it has affected the students because that are on the upstairs team don’t get to interact  as much, with the students on the downstairs team, so if they have friends on the opposite team, they don’t have any classes with them, they also can’t eat lunch with them. Team A goes to lunch at a different time than team B.

- B-Roll of kids in lunch line getting lunch

Stand Up= With all of the negative changes, students are thinking that there isn’t anything good from this change, but there is.

- Stand up (Ben Murray)

Ms. Finlay = I think the bell schedule is good, however I think the way the classes are positioned, isn’t good.

Mr. Godsill = So, one kid may argue, just by having a longer school day, does it necessarily mean that kids are learning more. That’s true, but we feel by lengthening the school day, we’re providing the students with more electives than also coupling that with our collaborative non teaching period where teachers are working together with administration to improve instruction. And we think that’s a great thing.

V.O = Some say that adding more classes are helping student’s education. But most students beg to differ.

- B-Roll Student doing their homework

Kevin Peterson = They added more classes and that’s just not helping kids, I just think really irritating, don't want to do good because they get home later and they don't have free time and stuff

- Picture of low test score

- Library of kids reading/playing games

V.O. = Students and teachers feel that the new bell schedule change is a negative thing, and they want to change things back to normal, and make a few adjustments that they believe will help students.

- Split screen of both Teams at Lunch and then Team B in eating separately

- Picture of bell schedule

Ms. Finlay =  I think they should get rid of X-Block. Since the original idea of X-Block was to have a remedial reading, or math class. And they did that, because they didn’t want to take away electives from student, Before we only had two electives, and now we have four. I think the X-Block should be taken away, and one of the electives can be turned into X-Block.

- Picture of the New Bell Schedule Paper

Kevin Peterson = I would put it back to the way before, because Team A and Team B can’t eat lunch together and they just added another period and made the day super long and it just sucks

Stand Up = Change can be hard. Hopefully, the students and teachers can adjust to the change, and find that this is an opportunity for some good. From Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, this has been Ben Murray, reporting.
